First time using AI? AIToolMart is the entry-level AI solution for ordinary people - no coding, no English needed. This is an AI starter guide for small business owners: copy the prompts and you're ready, no need to start from scratch.

Mr. Wah has run a cha chaan teng (Hong Kong diner) in Yuen Long for twenty-one years. He can cook every rice dish on the menu board, but freezes at the word "writing". Last Friday at 11:30pm, after seeing off the last table, he sat in a booth trying to write a Facebook post promoting the next day's curry beef brisket rice - typed, deleted, typed again, and forty minutes later he still had only three lines. His son called to tell him to come home for dinner, heard his dad sighing, and said: "Why don't you let ChatGPT try it? It's free." Mr. Wah blurted out: "That's such high-tech stuff, can I even use it?" His son answered: "If you can talk, you can use it."

How a shop owner should see AI: a helper that never needs paying

Let's be direct: shop owners don't need to treat AI as some high-tech thing, but as a helper that never needs paying and is on call around the clock, ready to take on the "writing chores" you have no time for - menus, promotional posts, customer replies, accounting. Over 90% of Hong Kong businesses are SMEs, and an owner often juggles front-of-house, kitchen and bookkeeping alone. The scarcest resource is never technology - it's time. The four things below need no computer skills, and the free versions can all do them.

Four methods you can start today (all free, all in plain language)

Method 1: AI menus - names, descriptions and pricing in one go

The most time-consuming part of a new menu is thinking up dish names and descriptions. AI delivers in minutes; you just pick.

Copyable prompt (ChatGPT or Doubao)
I run a diner and want a winter menu. These are a few new dishes and their ingredient costs: [list them, e.g. curry beef brisket rice, cost $14]. For each one, suggest an attractive dish name plus a description of no more than 15 words, and recommend a price range based on a typical diner's margin.

Note: AI-suggested prices are only a reference - decide by your shop's clientele and location. Also don't oversell dish names until they don't match the product; a customer who gets something different once never comes back.

Method 2: AI Instagram / Facebook posts, one a day without breaking the streak

Before, thinking of one post took half an hour; now the draft is done in five minutes.

Copyable prompt
Write a Facebook post promoting tonight's special curry beef brisket rice at $38. The tone should be like a cheerful diner owner, plain language, no more than three emojis, under 80 words, ending with an invitation to come try it tonight.

Note: check prices, times and offers one by one before posting. After the draft, add one sentence only you would say - for example "good brisket tomorrow lunch, come early" - so it feels human, not formulaic.

Method 3: AI replies to customer queries - it drafts, you decide

During opening hours the WhatsApp pings never stop: what time do you open? Can you seat ten? Ask AI for a draft and you relax halfway.

Copyable prompt
Here is a customer's WhatsApp query: [paste it, delete the customer's name and phone number first]. Draft a polite, friendly plain-language reply. Don't make any promises on my behalf; for anything uncertain write 'let me confirm'.

Note: AI may give irrelevant answers, and anything involving money or promises (bookings, private parties) you must review yourself before sending. Privacy is also a rule: delete customer names and phone numbers before pasting into AI.

Method 4: AI for costs and restocking - paste receipts, it organises

At month-end there's a pile of supplier invoices that used to be added up by hand. Now take a photo or type them into AI and it organises them into a table.

Copyable prompt (Gemini or ChatGPT both read receipt photos)
Here are my purchase receipts for this month: [photograph or list items and amounts]. Organise them into a table, work out which ingredient category costs the most, and tell me which one has risen in price fastest recently.

Note: AI can misread receipts and mis-calculate - double-check the total with a calculator before making any decision; if you're sensitive about supplier details on the receipts, cover them first.

The three biggest mistakes owners make with AI

Mistake 1
Posting without reviewing. Treat AI output as a draft. One wrong price or date and a small matter turns into a PR disaster.
Mistake 2
Pasting everything into AI. Customer privacy, staff details, entire accounts - cover or don't paste sensitive info before asking.
Mistake 3
Using AI to fake things. Asking AI to mass-write fake reviews or exaggerate food photos? The platform will ban your shop, and customers aren't blind. AI helps you express, not cheat.

A one-week action plan: start tonight

Shop owners using AI: common questions

I don't know English and I'm not good with computers - can I still use it?

Yes. Mainstream AI all understand natural language. If you can talk, you can use it - no joke.

How far apart are the free and paid versions?

For menus, posts and customer replies, the free version is more than enough. Unless you generate huge amounts of images and text daily, don't rush into a monthly fee - try free for a month first.

Can customers tell the post was written by AI?

A pure AI draft has a slightly "formulaic" feel. The fix is simple: AI drafts it, then you add one sentence only you would say. Customers love your shop's personality; AI just saves you the forty minutes of typing.
